Description
The Burning Punjab- 1947
This scene recreates the agony and suffering that millions suffered during the partition of the British Indian Empire. It led to the creation of the sovereign states of the Dominion of Pakistan (which later split into Pakistan and Bangladesh) and the Union of India (later Republic of India) on 15 August 1947. In the riots which preceded the partition, it is estimated that around 200,000 at the low end to a million and a half at the high end people lost their lives; nearly 14 million Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims were displaced during the partition. It was the largest mass migration in human history. Punjab before the partition of India, included the present-day federal states of Pakistan Punjab and Indian Punjab, as well as a number of semi-autonomous princely states of that time. Violence extended broadly and viciously during this political partition. Collective violence raged in the form of loot, capture of property , abduction and rape of women.
