Lord Buddha, the enlightened one.“Buddha” means “one who is awake.” Buddha lived 2,600 years ago. He was an ordinary person, named Siddhartha Gautama, whose profound insights inspired the world. Siddhartha was born into the royal family of a small kingdom on the Indian-Nepalese border. According to the traditional story, he had a privileged upbringing but was jolted out of his sheltered life on realizing that life includes the harsh facts of old age, sickness, and death. This led him to search for the ultimate truth. There are multitudes of buddhas, especially in Mahayana and Vajrayana scriptures and art. They represent aspects of enlightenment, and they also represent our own deepest natures. Some of the better known iconic or transcendent buddhas include Amitabha, the Buddha of Boundless Light; Bhaiṣajyaguru, the Medicine Buddha who represents the power of healing; and Vairocana, the universal or primordial Buddha who represents absolute reality. The way the buddhas are posed also convey particular meanings.
